Khanmigo
Khan Academy's AI tutor and teaching assistant — built for classrooms, with guardrails kids and parents can trust.
What it does
Khanmigo is Khan Academy's education-focused AI, designed as a Socratic tutor for students and a planning assistant for teachers. Rather than just handing over answers, it coaches students through problems. U.S. teachers get free access to the teacher tools, and a low-cost family plan covers home learners. It's purpose-built for education with safety and pedagogy in mind.
Best for, in an NCW context
- Educators: generate lesson plans, exit tickets, and rubrics aligned to standards — free for U.S. teachers.
- Educators: give students a tutor that nudges instead of spoon-feeds, keeping the thinking with the learner.
- Families/community programs: an after-school homework helper with age-appropriate guardrails.

Free, web-only alternative
Khanmigo is free for U.S. teachers. For families wanting a no-cost option, Khan Academy’s core lessons are free, and a general assistant like free ChatGPT can act as a homework coach with adult supervision.
The Data Cost of “Free”
Remember: when a tool is free, you’re often paying with your data.
Free AI tools generally train on your prompts, your uploads, your edits, and your usage patterns. That’s the trade. Before pasting in customer info, student records, IEP drafts, or anything else you wouldn’t email to a stranger — flip to a paid tier (which usually offers a “do not train on my data” toggle), use the tool’s enterprise tenant if your org has one, or use a free tier with non-sensitive content only.
The AiGovOps 3 Rules apply here
