The Expo serves seven tables — teachers, utility crews, tribal offices, clinics, small businesses, Spanish-speaking families, and community leaders. This page gathers the tools, demos, and guardrails for each of them, one community at a time. We start with the one that carries the deepest questions about who owns the data: Tribal Nations.
AI that answers to the nation, not the vendor
Indigenous data sovereignty — the principle that tribal nations hold authority over data about their communities, lands, and peoples — is a real constraint that most AI governance frameworks underaddress. Everything below is built to respect it first, and to be genuinely useful second.
The staging rule
Nothing sacred, nothing real. No actual tribal-language audio, no real cultural documents, no real legal filings on a screen. Every demo uses public documents and scripted roleplay. The restraint is the data-sovereignty lesson.
The OCAP® principles
Ownership, Control, Access, Possession. The First Nations standard for who governs community data. The Foundation is working to incorporate OCAP® into the Umbrella tool's tribal-community controls layer.
The practical starting point
Any AI tool used in a BIE or tribal school gets checked for where data is stored, whether it can train on student work, and whether the nation has contractual data-return rights — a Beacon scan plus a legal review of the vendor's data agreement.
The Tribal Council track
Five demos, built for the council table
Each one shows a real job a tribal office does — with the tool, the kind of "Yes" it earns, and the Pledge it keeps. Full step-by-step walkthroughs live in the Demo Lab.
The treaty-rights question
The citations for Colville-reserved fishing and hunting rights under the 1891 agreement — and the 2023–2026 court decisions that touch them, each source cited so council can check it.
The equity briefing
Turn a stack of public reports into one plain briefing for council — grounded only in the documents you loaded, every claim traceable back to its page.
The disagreement is the data
Ask two models the same hard question — should a tribal government use a US-hosted commercial LLM for internal deliberations on sovereignty? Where they disagree is the briefing. Screenshot it, take it to council.
The elder interview
Capture an oral history by voice and transcribe it faithfully — with consent, and only what is meant to be shared. The tool serves the record; the nation keeps it.
